• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Golden, British Columbia.
The little town with a big history, Golden, British Columbia is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, nestled among several national parks and wildlife reserves. In the 1850s, explorers hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) sought a route through the Rocky Mountains. Since then, Golden has seen the fortunes and decline of the logging industry and a growing hospitality sector. Tourism began early in Golden; by the turn of the century CPR was bringing a steady stream of visitors to the mountains by rail.

Today, Golden is a small alpine village of less than 5,000 residents but its natural beauty and the development of recreational and sporting opportunities mean that its streets bustle with visitors. Skiers, hikers and bikers use the vibrant community as a base to explore the snowy peaks, glacial rivers and ancient pine forests. Whether stopping en route to another destination, taking the opportunity to explore this mountain community, or seeking an exhilarating rush skiing or snowboarding down the slopes of the Purcell Mountains, visitors can choose from a number of budget to luxury hotels located throughout Golden.

DOWNTOWN GOLDEN

Downtown Golden is situated on the south side of the highway, at the junction of the Kicking Horse River and Columbia River. This area is a hub of activity with boutique stores, good restaurants, cozy cafes, colourful galleries and gift shops. A park and picnic area are cradled in the fork of the rivers, behind the train yards. Visitors can take an idyllic walk along the beautiful trail, past the rippling river, over rocky banks and through colourful wildflowers. Several accommodations can be found close by.

The Travelodge Downtown is an economical choice with complimentary amenities: breakfast, high-speed Internet and free movie and sports channels. The Rondo Hotel is a budget-friendly accommodation next to the bridge and river. It is a quiet hotel with a range of amenities, including an indoor pool, whirlpool and sauna. Similarly, Mary's Hotel is conveniently located and boasts a heated outdoor pool open during the summer months.

THE VILLAGE OF EDELWEISS

Approaching town from the northwest on the Trans-Canada Highway, travellers will reach the tiny village of Edelweiss, on the northern banks of the Kicking Horse River. This area was the original settlement created by the CPR for Swiss mountain guides and is now a base for the Canadian Alpine Club. This is a beautiful place to stay, interwoven with trails and pathways. It is also convenient to the highway, within walking distance to the centre of Golden and close to many activities, including hiking, skiing, golfing, rafting and snowmobiling.

Families will be comfortable in rooms at the Sportsman Lodge. Kids can burn off energy splashing around in the indoor pool and on the water slide while adults relax in the hot tub or work out in the gym. The Ramada is a similarly affordable option and also well suited to families. This hotel has a variety of guest rooms, as well as two-bedroom family suites. The hotel offers a range of amenities and services, including a playground, indoor pool, hot tub, laundry room, continental breakfast and high-speed Internet.

The Best Western Mountainview Inn is a mid-range Edelweiss hotel with deluxe amenities and spectacular mountain views. A more upscale option is the Prestige Mountainside Resort, with full recreational and relaxation facilities as well as a restaurant and lounge.

The Glacier Mountaineer Lodge is a home-away-from-home offering beautifully furnished condominium-style accommodation. Each suite has a kitchen, fireplace and spectacular views, and the property provides handy hotel amenities like a gym, sauna and hot tub to relax in after a day of adventure.

KICKING HORSE MOUNTAIN RESORT

Avid skiers and snowboarders often prefer to stay at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, a world-famous resort best known for its high vertical drops and champagne powder snow. This area also encompasses an enclosed grizzly bear refuge, home to two orphaned cubs that have benefited from the protective environment while learning the skills they need to survive in a natural setting.

Condominium-style hotels are popular on the mountain, giving visitors the benefit of hotel amenities along with the comforts of home. The Palliser Lodge Resort is a ski-in/ski-out hotel with 48 guest suites ranging in size from studio to two-bedroom units. Suites inspire relaxation after a day on the slopes with warm fireplaces, sweeping views and large, flat-screen TVs. Walking distance to the ski village, the Aspens is surrounded by towering pine forests and panoramic views. The one- and two-bedroom condominium-style suites are equipped with full kitchens, private hot tubs and private patios, making it a comfortable and leisurely place to stay on a ski vacation.

Whether visitors are in Golden for a quick stopover, a relaxing holiday or an exhilarating adventure, there is a hotel to accommodate all types of travellers.
